The World Conference of Women’s Shelters will be hosted by the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters. Individuals and organizations devoted to the issue of violence against women are invited to present papers at this event. The Conference is 8-11 September 2008 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The event will provide the opportunity to share knowledge, ideas about a theme that is often overlooked when discussing family violence and will increase the capacity of shelters worldwide to increase networking and bring about positive changes in their organizations and their communities when dealing with family violence.

Hello all,

I am a graduate student in clinical psychology, and am considering the eventual aim of working in humanitarian psychosocial rehabilitation for the long haul in my life... but first, on the quest to begin the quest, I am learning a good first lesson about how difficult it can be to come across short term work opportunities in my time frame and area of somewhat-expertise.

Many years ago there was a tribe of people who were experiencing challenges that were threatening their very existence.

During this “time of fear”, a young woman experiences a vision—of a bird which says to her “You must all leave where you are, and travel to a place far away… You must look for the tree at the center of the sacred hoop. You will know when you have found this tree when you hear birds singing on the branches of a tree, and you understand their song.”

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good organisations that deal with trauma that I could volunteer with in East, South and West Africa? I am keen to work alongside mental health professionals or support workers involved with young people who have suffered trauma from conflict, abuse, bereavement and so on.
