Perfect degree for an emergency aid career??

Submitted by Chris86 on May 2, 2007 - 5:37pm.

Hello. I have just joined this network and have not yet anything to offer but i do need some advice.

I am in the process of deciding which degree to do next year. i would like very much to go into the field of emergency aid and have found a degree that seems perfect. But it almost seems a bit to good to be true, will it equip me with the skills i need to start a career in emergency aid as i know this is a highly specialised area?

The degree is 'disaster management and engineering' at coventry university. the first year modules include; emergency management and engineering, introduction to disasters, field operations, organisation and management in disasters, earth systems.

Thankyou

Coventry is one of the best for "Disaster Management courses". Have they asked you to do a post graduate course in engineering, because some of the engineering is very complex?

I suggest that you try and order a book called " Engineering in Emergencies - A pratical guide for Relief Workers."
by Jan Davis and Robert Lambert. (IT publications on behalf of RedR).

I suggest you look at Intermediate Technology Publications, as they are the publishing arm of the Intermediate technology Development Group.

If you have problems obtaining this book, it is printed in the UK by SRP, Exeter or look on the web for RedR.

This will give you an insight into everything from Emergencies to Shelter, storage, and services.

This book will cover all your modules.

Good Luck, I hope this is useful,

Rosa Manson

There seems to be a plethora of Masters degrees in everything from human rights to development management, to NGO management, etc, a sign that the professionalisation and specialisation of the aid world is well on its way. However while you are meeting the academic criteria, nothing can replace practical experiance, which you will need. Many aid workers have degrees, but fewer stay around long enough to maintain institutional knowledge and indepth understanding of NGO operations, development and the politics and diplomacy behind aid operations, those that do have this experiance are highly prized, and many dont have higher education. I do have a MA, but I must admit while it gave me good grounding, the wealth of experiance I gained was in the field, and im still learning every time Im out there...

I would recommend these masters in education that will help you in your career. Online education is much easier if you know to organize your time in order to learn the things you need. Time is precious, and for the preparation in further education for the emergency aid it is very important to be serious when learning.
