Getting into mine clearance

Submitted by tomato on March 29, 2007 - 12:30pm.

Hello all

I'm a careers advisor for adults. One of my clients would like to work in mine clearance. He's 57, and has no military background or other relevant experience.

Do any of the organisations in this area offer on the job training or do all staff (from the UK) have relevant experience from the armed services?

I'd like to find out if my client's goal is at all realistic. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Vicky --

I'm reluctant to give a yes/no answer.

Perhaps the best way to determine an answer to this question is to evaluate the level and nature of experience asked for in past job descriptions for positions in mine action organisations (although we've made previous some remarks about how they often seem to ask for the moon on a stick!), review the positions offered to assess the diversity of roles, and see whether there are publicly offered training roles.

You can do this yourself. Head to www.reliefweb.int/vacancies - where most agencies post humanitarian vacancies - and run a search like so:

  • Sector: Mine Action
  • Uncheck "show only open vacancies" (so it will show closed vacancies)
  • Leave the different types of organisation (gov, ngo etc) checked

Then assess the job descriptions. A cursory glance shows quite a wide variety of roles from UXO disposal technicians to risk education and GIS officers. Search more thoroughy, and see what you think.

Thanks for responding so quickly Tom. I've been having a look on Relief Web but didn't realise I could view closed vacancies. I'm continuing to search for any training opportunities.

Most of the guys that I see here are from Cambodia and have been doing this work for years and years. Not to discourage your friend but in reality there are a plethora or highly skilled and experienced individuals that do this dangerous work so I'm not sure how likely it would be that he would be hired and trained in light of that.
