Water Retaining Structures

Submitted by smashysmash on May 18, 2010 - 12:33pm.

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good resource for the design of water retaining structures, preferably made from reinforced concrete, masonry etc.

I'm kind of looking for a beginner's guide which seems to be impossible, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Smashysmash,

First of all there are many reasons to seek advice from professional water engineers. This should be the first point of call. But moving on...

By water retaining structure do you mean a water tank or a water capture structure.

I'm going to assume we're just talking about a water tank. Here is an online manual. http://www.ferrocement.com/tankBook/indici.en.html

There are many other sources. unicef and oxfam have their own, for example. Google is overflowing with sources for this.

But that being said, an experienced engineer is a much better option because they will consider all the factors.

Hope this helps!

Hi James,

Thanks for your response. Interesting site, but I'm kind of looking to be able to calculate concrete, rebar requirements from stress equations, etc. and I just keep getting confused with the different serviceability, durability, ultimate state equations, etc. I just need something that goes through it REAAAALLY simply and slowly. I will lsee if I can get hold of an experienced engineer though, thanks! :)
