How getting rid of our used motor-oil?

Submitted by marcvallee on May 14, 2010 - 1:07pm.

Hi,

I have a very down-to-heart question for thos who like mechanic and have a fair the environment!

I work in Ivory Coast, and we have around 15 Landcruisers on my base. As you can imagine, we change motor-oil on a regular basis…

How can I get rid of the used motor-oil without hurting too much the environment? My staff options are: dropping it in the bush or burning it … hum, not very environment friendly!

Anyone have a suggestion for me?

Thanks for your help!

Marc

Your first step should be to ask the local car repair shops how they deal with it. If the answer is (as I suspect it will be), "we just dump it", then you have three other options:
1. See if the organisation you work for has some sort of solution set up.
2. See if anybody in your area operates an incinerator and use that one to get rid of the oil. Note that an incinerator is not the same as a burner: it reaches much higher temperatures which means that the emissions will contain less hazardous gases.
3. Build an incinerator yourself. Building a fixed-grate incinerator is not very difficult, but you do need a good design to build from (so as to make sure that the required hight temperatures are reached). The standard model for resource-constrained settings is the modified De Montfort incinerator.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Cheers,
Michael

Bonjour Michael,

Thanks for your reply and suggestions.

As you said, here all the local mechanics just dump it!

I found a website where they present the incinerator you mentionned. I will discuss with some staff to see if you can build it.

I will keep you informed!

Cheers, Marc

Hi,

As suggested, I made some research on the Monfort incinerator. Thanks to them, since the answered me rapidly. I was suggested to build the model Mark8a.

Here is there link, if people are interested or curious: www.mw-incinerator.info

Now the issue is to find out engough garbage to make it run. Since, their incinerators are not made for burning oil alone, but for medical waste... We will work on it!

As soon as we build it, it will update the poste!

Thanks again.

Marc

I know this thread is almost a year old but I have another suggestion.

In the past I have used engine oil, mixed with kerosene to protect timber against termites. If you don't have any construction projects it's not much help but if you do, it's a great way to use up at least some of it.

Cheers

Simon
