Where can I procure medical supplies on a small scale?Submitted by vjones on September 30, 2009 - 6:40pm.
I have recently become involved with an organisation in Kibera, Nairobi which hopes to open a health clinic servicing their school and eventually the community within the slum. I am an Australian registered nurse, but based in Canada, and currently the only health professional involved with the organisation. The organisation is very small but a great initiative and one which I am committed to long term. At this stage although we have a dedicated building, we do not have the staffing or supplies to open the clinic on an ongoing basis. For the interim, we are planning to open the clinic for a couple of weeks at a time throughout next year until we are able to staff the clinic full time. I will be travelling to the clinic in November this year with the intention of establishing health records for the students and conducting a few workshops on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, food & nutrition, sex education etc. As this is a new project we are still trying to find a company that can supply various but basic cost effective pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for the clinic on a very small scale basis. Can anyone recommend suppliers or contacts, that may be able to assist us? Also, are you able to offer advice on the logistics of importing medical supplies into Kenya? I am also lead to believe we need to register the importation of such supplies with the Kenyan government? Any advice anyone could give would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Vanessa Rivalino Bringing in pharmaceutical products from Canada will take a lenghty period of time to be registered by the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board as non-registered pharmaceutical products are not authorised to be sold in Kenya.Importing procedures are both pedantic and bureaucratic. You can get in touch with MEDS and CHMP, this are humanitarian supplies centres dealing with NGOs and CBOs they are non profit making. kenya@chmp.org and quotations@meds.or.ke Hmm, if you're talking about steroids then you have to look very carefully because there aren't much secure places where you can find them. I faced the same kind of problem some months ago when I really needed them. Maybe you should search the web or try the link I've suggested you above. Good luck! A question first: why import? Kenya has a flourishing private pharmaceutical trade, and you could do worse than buying through them: you would obviate the need to deal with importation issues and you would stimulate the local economy to boot.
If you insist on importing, could I suggest that you talk with the friendly people at MSF's Nairobi Supply Centre? They have been dealing with the issues for a long time and could save you a lot of work by pointing out possible pitfalls and shortcuts.
Good luck!
