Stormhaven a new idea in field security

Submitted by williamray on February 1, 2009 - 10:14pm.

Hello all my name is William Ray Im a former Canadian Peacekeeper starting a non-profit this spring. What I aim to do provide security and logistics support to other NGOs. This would include armed security personnel made up of primarily Canadian Peacekeeping vets. As well as close protection we will provide training and equipment to improve the NGO's overall security enviroment. We will also actively pusue and aprehend persons indicted by the ICC in or near our operational areas The idea is to provide aid agencies with a non-profit souce to turn to for security needs rather than the mercenaries that they currently turn too. Our personnel would share the world view and goals of the aid delivering agency. We will use this to advance the political point that aid agencies and thier personnel are protected by international treaty and have the right to work unmolested. I'm very interested in the opinion of anyone working in the Aid field no matter if they are negative as I understand the controversial nature of the idea Attached is an info pamphlrt please the more you disagree the more I want to hear from You
Sincerely
William Ray

Hi William,
As you should know, using armed protection is actually an important debate in the NGOs sphere, there are different opinions on this matter, especially between anglo-saxon and french NGOs.

I think that protecting NGO and in the same time aprehending persons indicted by the ICC can be dangerous for the NGOs and could restrict their operational area. You cannot enter in an area controlled by an armed group if you are protected by men who have a mandate to aprehend this armed group's leaders. Aprehending persons indicted by the ICC is of course a great objective, but it is incompatible with humanitarian mandate and objective. To my opinion you cannot do both.
Sincerely,
Nicolas Robe,
MDM Security Avisor Assistant
